GESTALT THERAPY, THE 2ND GENERATION:
A Living Legacy of Fritz and Laura Perls
- Second Revised Edition

by Bud Feder and Ruth Ronall

Gestalt Therapy, the Second Generation is a cutting edge book, a compilation of ground-breaking work by some of the leading Gestalt Therapists in the second generation, which means therapists who were directly trained by Fritz and Laura Perls, the originators of Gestalt Therapy. It is highly recommended!

This new book divides various Gestalt therapy sessions into two main sections: Individual Therapy, and Group and Organizational Therapy. By doing so, it chronicles a complete range of therapeutic situations, and becomes an invaluable guide book to practitioners in all walks of life. It is obvious the various authors have great skill and a deep understanding of Gestalt Therapy, and how to use it to facilitate positive change.

There's even a chapter by Anne Teachworth, called "Three Couples Transformed," from which inspiration came her popular Psychogenetics Theory for her popular book "Why We Pick the Mates We Do".

Table of Contents

PART 1: INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Chapter 1: For Emily: Whenever I May Find Her by Jon Frew

We begin the book with this case history because it is an exemplary presentation of Gestalt Therapy in action. Frew's main focus is on confluence and contact. Note the patience and sensitivity and respect with which he treats Emily.

Chapter 2: Bill: Finding Roots in the Hidden Ground of Loss by John Mitchell

A classic usage of Gestalt Therapy principles and therapist-client encounters. Mitchell provides numerous examples of interruptions of contact and his ways of handling them therapeutically (Editors).

Chapter 3: The Broken Doll: A Survivor's Journey Into Life by Ruth Wolfert

A description of a long-term multi-layered therapy with a client whose awareness deepens dramatically as the therapy progresses.

Chapter 4: The Integration of Self Psychology/Intersubjectivity
Theory into the Practice of Gestalt Therapy by Stephen G. Zahm, Ph.D. and Elaine K. Breshgold, Ph.D.

Following a presentation by Zahm of his long-term therapy with an initially "frozen" client, he and Breshgold provide a theoretical incorporation of self psychology/intersubjectivity principles into his Gestalt approach.

Chapter 5: A Gestalt Approach To Food Intolerance In Adults by Ray Edwards

This is an original contribution to Gestalt Therapy theory and practice and might alert therapists to the possibility that a client's diet may affect her or his mood or behavior. Although brief, the report is rich in ideas as well as lively descriptions of the author's work and person.

Chapter 6: "Yelena, Yelena, Keep Your Illusion ..."
A Critical Application of Beisser's Paradoxical Theory of Change by Ruth Ronall

Ronall presents the beginning phase of therapy with a woman in her sixties who had recently lost her husband and who was stuck in obsessive efforts to fill the void. A paradoxical intervention leads to a dramatic shift in her behavior, appearance and thinking. The narrative is accompanied by explanations in Gestalt terms of the author's thinking.

Chapter 7: Psychiatry and Gestalt Therapy: Beginning to Own Parts by Ginny McFarlane

This unique contribution provides us with an insight into the mind of a Gestalt Therapist who is also an unashamed medical practitioner. McFarlane describes two difficult cases requiring her to combine psychological and medical acumen. She ends with a challenge to all of us: biologically and psychologically-oriented alike.

Part II: Work with Couples, Children and Their Families,
Groups, and Organizations

Chapter 8: No Child Is An Island by Felicia Carroll

Carroll tells us about a case of a child she treated according to the Oaklander Model using clay and projective materials. She describes individual sessions in which she employs play, as well as sessions with the child, mother, stepfather and distant natural father, enabling all these members of the family to better understand and accept each other.

Chapter 9: Quaternary: Family Therapy With Four Generations by Ruth Lampert

Lampert's chapter will be of special interest to family therapists who routinely see the family as a whole. By contrast she begins her therapy with the grandmother and gradually and with great sensitivity includes all the relevant members of the family, ending up with a multigenerational group. In addition she weaves into the narrative Gestalt Therapy principles as well as her personal reactions.

Chapter 10: Three Couples Transformed by Anne Teachworth

You will find Teachworth's chapter rewarding reading since she presents with clarity and detail a novel approach to couples therapy, using the concept of parental introjection as the basis for her understanding and treatment of the couple's conflict. She describes how through experiments she helps each client become more aware of her/his parental introjects, thereby allowing them to gradually make undistorted contact with each other and her.

Chapter 11: Two Couples Who "Couldn't" by Bud Feder

In this study Feder describes a situation in which he and his co-therapist, a very good friend, undertook to help a couple resolve their severe conflict. They encourage the expression of feelings with the therapist couple participating, thereby modeling openness and enhancing contact. To everyone's sorrow, the case ended with the couple separating. An interesting question is posed by Feder - should he consider this case a success or failure?

Chapter 12: The Healing Through Relationship in an Interactive Gestalt Group by Jay Earley

Earley focuses on the therapeutic experience of an individual in a Gestalt Therapy interactive group. Along the way he provides the reader with his rationale for this method - which is a departure from customary Gestalt Group Therapy - as well as describing experiments which support this mode.

Chapter 13: An Extended Group Experience by Jack Aylward

After giving us a brief history of marathon groups, Aylward tells us the complete story of a marathon in which he was a coleader. In addition to describing colorfully development of the group-as-a-whole and work with individuals, he explicates the rationale for the leaders' actions as well as providing guidelines for prospective marathon group therapists.

Chapter 14: Living, Loving, and Laughter in an HIV/AIDS Therapy Group by Perry Klepner

We are pleased to present Klepner's timely chapter on group therapy with men who are under the cloud of threats of HIV/AIDS. Into his description of the group process and individuals' development are numerous examples of his use of Gestalt principles. Throughout the chapter the reader is struck by Klepner's courage and creativity in facing and addressing catastrophic situations and desperate people - never giving up.

Chapter 15: Politics and Personalities in Gestalt and Other Fields by Gaie Houston

Houston's contribution challenges the reader to accompany her on her travels as consultant to two Gestalt training communities. We watch her "speak and think gestalt Therapy" with the members of the communities and she shares her ideas about the different outcomes of her consultation - outcomes which are dependent on the degree of openness to her approach. Her description of the different fates of these organizations is written in an elegant and erudite style - a pleasure.

Paul McKenna’s Testimonial for Why We Pick The Mates We Do

“I have long suspected that the traditional psychological view that our adult lives are spent trying to compensate for the unmet needs of our childhood, is only part of the picture. I believe Anne Teachworth’s work is important, because she has discovered some of the missing parts. Through her excellent book you can too. Not only will you find it fascinating, but life changing.”

TWO ARTICLES BY ANNE TEACHWORTH - E-BOOK PDF FORMAT - JUST $5 EACH

Psychogenetics in Redecision Therapy: The Next Generation of Couples Work
by Anne Teachworth and Phyllis Jenkins

Traditionally, Redecision Transactional Analysis therapists assume that couples project past difficulties in their Child-Parent relationships onto their partner. However, the new Psychogenetic SystemTM profile explores the parents' relationship issues with each other, as remembered by the adult child. Corrective re-imprinting involves facilitating role play by the adult child to rewrite his or her couple scripts.  $5

“A fascinating trip 'down the rabbit hole' of the mind to reveal the most powerful of motivating factors in modern relationships.”
— Michael Stark

Response to Ted Schwartz's Article "The Landmines of Marriage: Intergenerational Causes of Marital Conflict   by Anne Teachworth

"I appreciate the image of land mines that Ted uses to describe the highly charged marital introjects that are buried deep in the terrain of the current couple's relationship.... The root of the problem is the troubled relationship that existed between the adult parents in the client's childhood, not the client's relationship with the parents then."  $5

Run Ruby Run!

by Ruby Reed Lyons with Sean David Hobbs

edited by Anne Teachworth

Ruby Reed Lyons celebrated her 70th birthday with the publication of this book. Born into a wealthy prominent Catholic family, she lived in Beaumont, Texas, until she moved to New Orleans to attend Loyola University, where she met Pio, whom she married and later divorced. Together, they have five grown children.

Ruby says she had a “perfect life” until that fateful day twenty-six years ago when she was shot in the face by two young assailants. Her valiant struggle to recover from the devastating efforts of that injury and her honest self-reflection on how she brought that suffering into her life will enlighten and inspire you. Always smiling and with a constant twinkle in her eye, Ruby still lives in Uptown New Orleans in the same house where the shooting occurred and where her transformation began.

Co-author Sean David Hobbs loves to connect with new people and cultures. He has lived and worked in Wisconsin, San Francisco, and also in Istanbul, Turkey. He came to New Orleans in the summer of 2006 to help with the relief effort following Hurricane Katrina. While in New Orleans, Sean has written and done media work for a variety of regional publications and organizations. He and Ruby began working on her unique story together in the spring of 2007.
